Queen Anne: Another Perfect Single

There is almost too much talent in Americana right now. It’s almost as though they’re doing it just to keep me at the typewriter one more hour. That’s how it feels.

I first became aware of Queen Anne, fronted by vocalist Katie Silverman, in the spring. They had released their debut, Real Enough, and were yet to release their Bowie tribute, Let’s Dance, which has been re-imagined and is almost unrecognisable in terms of the music and production. The look and sound of Katie calls to mind Sophie Ellis-Bextor for British eyes / ears.

I have been listening to today’s single, Lexi Loves Me, for weeks now. This is a subtle song, orchestral and cinematic in places. And a vinyl static crackle, even on streaming.

Queen Anne Delivers a Fresh Vision of David Bowie's “Let’s Dance" for Indie Pop Lovers

“Let’s Dance” rolls out on a brooding acoustic guitar topped by Silverman’s evocative, haunting vocals, suffused in dark, sensual tones. A galloping rhythm summons suggestions of Chris Isaak and Ennio Morricone, merging flavors of alt-pop and Spaghetti-Western into a bewitching, swaying motion. Under Queen Anne’s deft touch, the tune takes on a whole new and wonderfully innovative personality.

With its shadowy, quiet storm feel, as well as its avant-garde-country coloring, “Let’s Dance” is intense and appealing.

Your Next Favorite Song Is On This Summer Playlist

With a dark, ethereal, and sarcastic blend, Queen Anne arrives with their debut single “Real Enough,” a song about those days when everything seems to go wrong (like when you order a sandwich without cheese... and it comes with cheese anyway). Behind the band is producer Sandy Chila, alongside actress and singer Katie Silverman.

“Real Enough” blends ‘80s sounds, pop punk, and a post-modern sensibility that moves effortlessly from humor to emotional release. “I wanted to write a song that felt like being on both sides at once,” says Katie. That complexity comes through loud and clear, especially in the track’s surreal video.

Review: "Real Enough" - Queen Anne

Bursting onto the indie-pop scene, Queen Anne have released their debut single, "Real Enough." The quirky track seems to capture what it's like dealing with a narcissist, having them constantly blame you for everything while they think they're flawless.

Queen Anne Deliver A Stark Reimagining Of Bowie's ‘Let's Dance’

While the original ‘Let's Dance’ stands tall as a jubilant, strutting ode to the night, Queen Anne’s version is a hushed, contemplative affair. It opens with the soft strum of an acoustic guitar, setting a solemn tone that is soon joined by Katie’s vocals. Her slightly distorted, ethereal delivery feels less like an invitation to a party and more like a whispered secret, adding a haunting quality that transforms the song’s essence.

The contrast between this tone and the surprising, but welcome rhythm that emerges is where the track truly shines. A galloping beat enters, bringing together a sweet, smoky blend of alt-pop sensibilities and avant-garde country that just works. It’s a stroke of creative genius, turning the track into a bewitching, swaying motion that is as introspective as it is danceable.

Queen Anne Delivers a Fresh Vision of David Bowie's “Let’s Dance" for Indie Pop Lovers

Their version of “Let’s Dance” is dark, surreal, and ethereal, almost otherworldly. It opens with a soft acoustic guitar before Katie’s slightly distorted vocals enter, adding to the track’s haunting, dreamlike quality. Despite the eerie tone, the melody soon steps into the spotlight, revealing a catchy and surprisingly danceable rhythm. This contrast between the distorted vocals and upbeat groove creates a fascinating push and pull. Listeners may feel a blend of nostalgia and haunting allure, as the familiar yet transformed melody recalls the original while offering something entirely new. The combination invites both introspection and movement, making the track thought-provoking and unexpectedly uplifting.

David Bowie's 'Let's Dance' Reimaged By Queen Anne

Queen Anne is excited to release their second single, a cover of David Bowie's iconic 1980s hit "Let's Dance." The song is out now on all digital platforms.

Speaking about the track, Queen Anne's Katie Silverman says: "When I was younger, Bowie was a huge influence, not just his music but in his persona, and his visuals, and just the whole vibe. I really wanted to cover one of his songs, both to pay homage and as an excuse to listen to them over and over. I picked 'Let's Dance' because there's something so fervent, so this-is-our-last-chance about that song, and because I already owned a pair of red shoes."

Built on a foundation of moody synths and post-modern wit, “Real Enough” walks the line between ‘80s pop-punk nostalgia and dreamy alt-pop edge. At its core is a paradox: how can you be both the attacker and the attacked? Silverman’s lyrics, both cutting and clever, grapple with this question in ways that are as emotionally evocative and loaded with dark humor.
